Your Role as Mother of the Bride

Whether you’re an experienced MOB or this is your first time, preparing for your daughter’s wedding may be hard to navigate. Many mothers struggle with knowing exactly what their role as Mother-of-the-Bride entails, and to be honest, there’s no hard and fast list of duties. It all comes down to how involved you feel comfortable being and how involved your daughter wants you to be. With that being said, here’s our list of situations you might encounter in your role as Mother-of-the-Bride and how to handle them.

Planning the big day is a roller coaster of emotions – there’s excitement, stress, joy, anxiety, and a million and one things to do. As the MOB, helping with wedding planning and organizing is like that 4th grade science project you helped out with all those years ago times a hundred. You may be more or less involved depending on your daughter, but either way you’ll likely be a part of the planning process, which can include helping plan the guest list, picking colors, venues, linens, cake flavors, bridal shower, dress shopping, and more! Just ask your daughter what SHE wants your help with.

One of your many roles as Mother-of-the-Bride is to provide support for your daughter. Whether it’s stress from planning or just pre-wedding jitters, you have the opportunity to share your experience with her and remind her that everything will be alright. Support her choices when it comes to wedding planning even if you don’t agree because at the end of the day it’s her wedding not your chance to relive yours.

Family Traditions

This is your opportunity to share any family traditions or heirlooms with your daughter. Family traditions are a great way to combine your family’s past with your daughter’s future, but remember that your job is to provide advice and knowledge about these traditions, not to become the enforcer. For some brides family tradition is everything, but for others it’s not something they want to incorporate into their wedding day. Just do your best to be open to whatever your daughter decides.

Whatever your role as MOB entails, trust your instincts, and don’t sweat the small stuff. However, if you do find yourself a little overwhelmed.
